So many members of the American Workforce have found themselves abruptly jobless and suddenly unemployable with too much competition vying for the same few jobs.  A great many of these workers will decide that they are in need of a new career direction; and often that means additional education.  Some will opt to return to a traditional college setting to pursue an advanced degree, others will attempt to learn a new skill through Internet-based education and still others will enroll in license/certification program, such as massage therapy courses.

Massage therapy is a rapidly growing industry.  Only in the last few years has the average American really become aware of touch therapy, and the myriad healing benefits, both physical and emotional, of massage in all of its different varieties.  A person can become a Licensed Massage Therapist in just a fraction of the time it would take to obtain most other professional degrees.  Unlike many other fields, massage is expected to continue growing in the foreseeable future. 

Here are just a handful of flexible options available to LMTs:

• Work part time or full time.
• Work a set schedule or set your own schedule.
• Work for an established entity – i.e. salons, spas, healthcare facilities, health clubs, sports medicine clinics, cruise lines and so on or establish your own private practice, set your own hours and work as many hours as you like.

This is not a get-rich-quick scheme.  Most massage therapists have selected their vocation because they genuinely want to help people.  It is important to remember that this is a business like any other and as with any career or venture, it is only as limited as the individual practitioner.  Anyone with a good work ethic, great interpersonal skills, motivation, focus and dedication should be able to succeed in this field but it is important to remember that you are the best marketing tool you have at your disposal and your reputation will ultimately be your most valuable commodity in developing and (more importantly) retaining your clientele.  

Continue reading »]]> The heat recovery steam generator is an equipment that is used to recover heat that is produced by hot gas. The heat that is produced is often used in co-generation or to power a steam turbine.

Heat recovery steam generators are used in a variety of ways around the world. One of the most typical ways in which it is used is to capture and convert exhaust heat from gas turbines into steam to power steam turbines in combined cycle power plants. This sort of combination is thought to be able to produce electricity in a more efficient manner than either the steam turbine or the gas turbine can do on their own. It is also used in combined cycle power stations that use diesel engines to generate heat. Heat recovery steam generators are also used in co-generation power plants. These plants are generally thought to be more efficient than combined cycle plants. The inefficiency associated with the combined cycle plants is due largely to the level of energy loss from steam turbines.

There are some heat recovery steam generators which come with supplemental duct firing. The extra burners actually provides additional energy for the heat recovery steam generator, which generates more steam and therefore increases the steam turbines overall output. Duct firing is usually used for peak operations because it generally costs less to produce electricity. Some heat recovery steam generators even have regulator valves which are used to control inlet into the heat recovery generator. This makes it possible for the gas turbine to keep operating even when there is no demand for steam or if the heat recovery generator is being taken offline.

Emission control is also included in some heat recovery systems. They either have a system for selective catalytic reduction, which is used in the reduction of nitrogen oxide or some sort of catalyst for the removal of carbon monoxide, or both.

Continue reading »]]> You may think going in to the hospital for surgery is scary, but just be glad your doctor isn’t coming near you with these tools that surgeons in the past used on their patients. Between the 1500′s and 1800′s cleanroom clothing and sterilized instruments of any kind were not used. If that’s not scary enough, these instruments sound like they should have come out of a horror movie, not an operating table.

1. Amputation Knife – This long, curved knife was used in the 1700′s to cut through the patient’s skin and muscle, before using a saw to cut through the bone. In the 1800′s a straight knife took it’s place because it left a flap of skin that could be used to cover the stump.

2. Amputation Saw – This saw with it’s intricate designs, was used by the wealthier doctors, who wanted to flaunt their riches to the world. It turned out that the designs themselves were harboring tons of germs that could be transferred to the patient.

3. Bullet Extractor – This long nail like tool was used in the 1500′s to extract bullets that were lodged deep within the patient’s body. The screw on the tip would pierce the bullet and pull it out.

4. Artificial Leech – In the 1800′s using leeches to suck a patient’s blood was very common for many ailments. In 1840 the artificial leech was made. It had rotating blades that would rip through the patient’s skin and a vacuum to suck out blood. This tool was commonly used in eye and ear surgeries.

5. Cervical Dilator – Labor is a slow and painful process, but in the 1800′s this tool made it even more painful. With handles on one end, the surgeon could decide how far to stretch the women’s cervix by how far he pulled the handles apart. It was eventually banned because it often caused the cervix to tear.

6. Lithotome – Used in the 1740′s to 1830′s this tool was used to cut open the patient’s bladder to remove stones. The spring loaded tool had a hidden blade inside that was released into the bladder, cutting it open and releasing the stones.
